Once I accepted I was not the savior, that I alone was no one in the story of the Wandering Queen, I sought the aid of the two people who meant the most to me. Thus, three years after my departure from our homeland, I established the Eternal Coven. Our goal was to find the truth behind the prophecy.

Rustles. Distant chattering. The smell of dust. An urgent yet gentle voice. “Panthea.”

The breeze brushing over the cold sweat on her forehead. The dull pain creeping into her head. She was alive.

“Panthea.”

She opened her eyes to Arvin’s blood-spattered face, his creased brow, and a smile that barely even touched his lips.

Her arms proved too weak when she tried to sit up, and the slightest push made her dizzy. Arvin came to her aid, pulling her up with such power she thought he’d throw her yards away. But he eased his force just at the right time.

“What happened?” she asked.

It took him a second—and a deep sigh—to talk. “Well, I realized I messed up for one. I shouldn’t have argued with you about the damned potion.”

Oh, no. Cowering in anticipation of what she might hear, she asked, “What did I do?”

Before she looked back to find out, he grabbed her by the temples and turned her head to himself. “Remember. Whatever you did, it wasn’t your fault. You warned us about your power. We didn’t listen.”

Panthea’s lungs locked her out. “Please tell me.”

He bit his lip. “You killed everyone. Friend and foe.”

A chill ran through her. The beginning of a sob exploded from her throat, which was cut short by the searing in her cheek and the twisting headache that made even breathing impossible.

She squeezed her eyes closed until the pain let go. Then she took a few sharp breaths before she could utter, “Ash? Evian?”

“Evian stayed in the carriage, so he was safe. I pulled Mart away from you as soon as I noticed you were out of control. Ash tried to save you. You attacked her.”

Panthea wished those visions had been just power-lust delirium. She covered her face, and this time, even the pain could not stop the flow of tears. Under her fingers she felt the roughness of the deep cut the arrow had left, and the sutures that held her skin together and tugged at every wrong movement of her facial muscles.

“Don’t worry,” Arvin said. “She’s fine. One of our men went to separate you. He became your target instead.”

“I’m a monster,” she wheezed. She extended her hand and motioned to him to help her up. “I need to talk to Ash.”

“I don’t think it’s a good idea,” said Arvin.

“I… don’t think I care what you think.”

After another moment of hesitation, he relented and complied.

When she turned to see her work, her head grew lighter than it had been, and she almost collapsed again. There was no part of the ground that wasn’t covered in blood or body parts.

Arvin took her to where Ash sat on a rock, clutching her knees.
